Chapter Six
It was still dark when Mel opened her eyes again. Nigel was sleeping in his cot opposite her, his breathing soft and gentle. He slept with his arm above his head, his other hand resting on his chest. To Mel, it looked like he was posed between relaxed and ready to jump up and take action. Maybe he was. His face was peaceful, though. Whatever dreams he was having clearly happy ones. When was the last time Mel had slept so soundly?
She frowned when she noticed a scar on his arm. The scar started at his elbow and disappeared into his shirt sleeve. She wanted to reach out and touch the skin where it was puckered and hadn’t healed in the correct way. It hadn’t healed at all really. Shifters didn’t tend to have scars, not on the outside, at least. The physical ones healed so quickly that it would look like nothing had ever happened to them. Some believed that when there was a scar left on the outside; it meant that the shifter hadn’t dealt with the pain that had caused it, and the body wouldn’t heal. Maybe that’s what it was for Nigel. Had something hurt him that much that he wasn’t healing from it?
How far did the scar go? Just thinking that brought images to her mind of his chest, the naked firmness of it. She closed her eyes, picturing her fingers running along his scar and under his shirt. She imagined bunching the hem of his shirt up and pulling it above his head as he slept. She pictured her lips on his, her body pressed against his …
Clenching her fist, she shoved it under the thick blanket to stop herself from reaching over and doing any of the stupid things she had just imagined doing. This was madness. It was just her leopard. She knew that. Maybe that was why she had been paired with him. They knew it would make her leopard cry out for things that she wanted … that she denied herself. She wasn’t mated, and neither was he. But why would they want to do this to her? Nothing made sense to her.
That alone made Mel wonder what he was doing here, wasting his life. Why wasn’t he somewhere with a mate of his own, cubs to look after? He seemed like the kind of man who would make a good father. Some men held that quality about them. She wasn’t sure what it was exactly, but he had an air about him that said ‘This man is a father’.
He rolled onto his side suddenly so that he was facing her, eyes open and looking right at her. She gave a small gasp, but didn’t break eye contact with him. Without thinking, she reached out toward him, her hand in the void between them. Her stomach fluttered as she did, nervous he wouldn’t respond. But he reached out, his hand warm and strong as he held hers, lacing his fingers through hers.
